As we commemorate World Energy Storage Day, we took the opportunity to connect with some of our team members at VFlowTech to hear their perspectives on the energy storage industry. Read on for their insights and what drives them to contribute to the future of clean energy.
Qn: What do you do at VFlowTech?

Dr. Ravi Ranjan sharing VFlowTech’s research findings at International Flow Battery Forum (IFBF) 2023
Nitish: I lead the system design and techno-commercial tasks, overseeing a team responsible for system design, sizing, battery layout planning, energy simulation reports, microgrid presentations, and the preparation of both technical and commercial proposals for our microgrid projects. I also provide 360-degree support to the business team. Each day presents new challenges from clients, whether optimizing microgrid sising or ensuring seamless grid integration, but it’s these challenges that drive us to continuously innovate and improve.
Dr. Loh: As the Head of Power and Control, I lead a team responsible for creating the control and management systems for our flow batteries. Every day, we face unique challenges, from refining the power conversion systems for microgrids to ensuring seamless integration with the grid, but it’s those moments that really push us to innovate and grow.
Dr. Ravi: I work as the R&D Manager and lead the product development of Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) systems of various sizes.
Qn: Can you share with us a brief overview of your contributions to advancing energy storage innovations at VFlowTech?

Nitish: Since joining VFlowTech in 2019, I’ve supported the team across multiple departments, from technical roles in microgrid projects to developing IoT dashboards and handling techno-commercial tasks. These experiences have strengthened my ability to manage daily responsibilities, and I’m committed to helping VFlowTech reach new milestones in the coming years.
Dr. Loh: We’re continuously working on enhancing our flow battery performance—whether by improving round-trip efficiency, reducing shunt current losses, upgrading energy-efficient pumps, or optimising power converters. Every improvement takes us a step closer to building a more sustainable and effective energy storage system.
Dr. Ravi:
My focus has been on optimising Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) systems, ensuring they are scalable, efficient, and durable. By advancing large-scale energy storage solutions, I’m supporting the integration of renewable energy into the grid, which is key to building a resilient energy infrastructure.
Qn: What motivates you to work in the field of clean energy and energy storage?

Nitish Kumar speaking to a booth visitor during India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2023
Nitish: I believe renewable energy is key to a sustainable future. My focus on long-duration energy storage systems and microgrids aligns with my vision to make clean, reliable, and efficient energy accessible to all. Our projects fuel my passion to help drive the global transition towards greener, more sustainable energy solutions.
Dr. Loh: In a world where environmental challenges are increasingly urgent, I believe our work plays a critical role in the solution. Long-duration energy storage is essential for the transition to a sustainable and resilient future, maximising the potential of renewable sources and creating a more balanced, efficient energy grid.
Dr. Ravi: I’m driven by the potential of renewable energy and innovative storage solutions, like VRFBs, to reduce our carbon footprint and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy systems. For me, it’s about using technology to positively impact both the environment and society.
